The Brooklyn Grand

A modern vision of old Brooklyn is located at 774 Grand Street. Called The Brooklyn Grand, the large new mixed-use building anchors the corner of Grand and Humboldt Streets. Meshberg Group designed the eight-story building with a nod to the industrial roots of its rapidly changing Brooklyn neighborhood. The developer client’s desire for a contextually appropriate style for the area’s past and present is made manifest in both its façade and interiors.

The exterior design concept is a classic industrial design with a modern feeling metal clad addition at the top. From the historically appropriate arched windows, sills, cornices, and brickwork to the carefully chosen slightly worn looking brick itself, the goal was to create a building envisioned for a modern lifestyle while paying tribute to turn of the century Brooklyn warehouses.

The transitional-meets-traditional-industrial Brooklyn concept continues in the interiors. The lobby was designed to feel like an old warehouse bay with historically replicated exposed ceiling joists and brickwork. The feeling of a refurbished older space extends down to the flooring, which is also rendered in an older pattern. Warm, glowing industrial-deco style light fixtures crown the room. In the elevator lobby, an indoor “skylight” is a bright, welcoming feature. The furnishings are carefully selected vintage and mid-century derived to warmly imbue the space with a sense of modern nostalgia.

The “past-present” concept extends to the residential floors units, where even the door numbers are thoughtfully considered. Custom made from reclaimed wood and softly lit from within, each number sets the tone for what lies beyond its door. Apartments are clad in exposed concrete ceilings (another reference to industrial history), subway tile, shaker paneled cabinets, and oak flooring. The simple palette is juxtaposed with dark, oil rubbed faucets and fixtures. Divided light windows deliver both historical style and added warmth. The residences are finished with stainless steel European appliances.

The Brooklyn Grand offers a truly grand urban lifestyle. Topped with a communal roof space with 360 degree views of Brooklyn and Manhattan, it is softened with inviting wooden trellises. Amenities include a fire pit, two grilling stations, wet bars, private dining areas, and lounge chairs.
